Pastor Chris said you should set your mind on spiritual things

A while ago, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome spoke about the significance of setting your mind on spiritual things. He even went through the Scriptures and stumbled on this specific quote:

“Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth” (Colossians 3:2).

The man of God explained that even though “affection” is quite a good and strong rendering in the verse above, the Greek word, “phroneo” is a little more practical.

“It means to set your mind or your thinking; an activity of the mind; how your mind works,” explained Pastor Chris.

“It originates from two words; one meaning, ‘To reign in,’ like you say, ‘I have got to reign this fellow in’; that is, to bring him under control,” he added.

The Pastor then explained that the second word means, “To block in or fence in.” Thus, the admonition to set your affection on things above means to have control of your mind and consciously set your thinking on spiritual things.

“Remember that the things you think about are the things that will control your actions,” stated the man of God.

“Exercise your mind to develop a liking for spiritual things; exercise your interest in the things of God,” says Pastor Chris

Pastor Chris later gave examples that made his point come clearer. He explained that you may have been wrestling with certain habits; habits that affect the way you serve and live for the Lord; habits that reduce your effectiveness and efficiency.

“You might have prayed about it, yet nothing seemed to have changed,” said the man of miracles. “It is not so much about prayer as it is about the use of your mind! Your mind is a very powerful machine; you can twist or control it any way you choose,” emphasized the man of God.

So, what the Pastor said you must do is first consciously refuse to think about those things you know are not wholesome, and deliberately focus your mind on the Word of God.

Practice exercising your mind through conscious thought. If, for whatever reason, an unwholesome thought comes to you, say, “No,” and then, switch your mind to something excellent, to the Word.

“Do not be surprised if such thoughts creep in again; resist them and repeat the process. It says in James 4:7 says ‘…Resist the devil, and he will flee from you,’” declared Pastor Chris.

He went on saying, “God knows what is in the devil, and He tells us if we resist him, he will flee; that has got to be the necessary result!”

He said, “Exercise your mind to develop a liking for spiritual things; exercise your interest in the things of God. Attend church services.”

And so, continue studying Study and meditating on the Word of God. Maintain a robust prayer schedule. Win souls.

Pastor Chris explained time and time again that these are spiritual activities to consciously engage in, in training yourself to “reign in” your outward man or woman!
